The City Of Lacey worked with Artisans Group to develop two pre-approved Backyard Cottage designs! Backyard Cottages, also called Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), are gaining in popularity due to their versatility. They can provide space for your family, friends and out of town guests, an affordable rental unit, or just a private studio space in your own backyard. Some people even build one to live in and rent out their house. There are so many possibilities and we’re here to help you through the process, step by step. You can customize your roof style, siding, color, windows, and doors.

Process for Using Pre-Approved Detached ADU Designs
If you would like to use a pre-approved design, here’s the process:
- Determine Financing- please apply now with The Dorman Team
- Talk with Planning and Building for general site feasibility
- Review all restrictive covenants with your HOA, if you have one.
- Pick up a pre-approved design
- Consult with a builder for a more detailed feasibility review and cost estimates
- Apply for Permits
A Complete Permit Application includes:
- 2 Copies of a Site Plan (See checklist for how to develop a complete site plan)
- 1 Copy of the Pre-Approved plans with your selected options
- Any additional information based on early conversations with the Department (trees, stormwater, etc)
Timeline For Review
If you submit a complete application your review can take as little as a few days. We encourage you to meet with City staff before you submit so we can discuss your project.
